Earlier today I had the pleasure of taking part in Summer of Tech’s Auckland Design Bootcamp as a speaker and contributor.
Along with many in the design industry, I feel that there is a gap between what design students are taught and the reality of working in a studio or agency on a day-to-day basis. The team at Summer of Tech felt the same about the tech industry and were set up to bridge that gap. Originally run in Wellington, their bootcamps have recently been brought to Auckland.
The focus of the bootcamps, and the other SoT programmes is to equip students and lead them towards a Summer internship – which will ideally lead them to full-time work in the design industry.
At today’s bootcamp I spoke about brand design, and the necessity for professional designers to work within the ‘box’ of brand guidelines. Other presenters included David Mannl of Fairfax, Meghan White of Spark Ventures, Matt Buchanan of Cactuslab and Jacky Lee with Jade Tan of Vend.
